This clinical study investigates on the antidepressant efficacy and underlying mechanisms of psilocybin in combination with psychotherapeutic counselling as a novel therapeutic approach in the treatment of depression.
Depression is a common and frequently recurring chronic condition, which often leads to considerable impairments in daily life, relationships and at the workplace of affected individuals. In previous studies we have shown that the active ingredient psilocybin enhances mood in healthy individuals and attenuates the processing of negative stimuli. In this study, we aim to investigate whether a single moderate dose of psilocybin leads to rapid and sustained symptom improvement in depressed patients. Additionally, we want to elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms of action of psilocybin by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to further refine this novel therapeutic approach. Insights gained from this study may lead to an innovative approach for the treatment of depression and make an important contribution to the alleviation of the individual, societal, and economic burden of depressive diseases.
